Remembering Walter Holloway
September 9, 1917 ~ October 16, 2011 Walter Joseph Holloway passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Hospital in Drumheller, Alberta on October 16, 2011. He leaves behind his loving nieces and nephews: Gerald and Sofia Mancini of Drumheller, Jim and Vicki Mancini of Deer Lake, John and Judy Oakley of Jacksonville, Florida, their respective families and best friend Muriel MacBean of Calgary.
He was born in the Crownest Pass, moved with his family to Calgary at an early age and joined the Canadian Army in 1939. He served with the 5th Armoured Division, Royal Canadian Engineers, 10th Field Squadron in Italy, France, Holland and Germany. He was also a member of the 2nd Division Soccer Champs while stationed in Holland at the end of the war. After his discharge he continued his upholstery trade, worked for a period in Trail, B.C. but returned to his beloved Calgary. He spent many years as a member of the grounds-keeping staff at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. He was an excellent golfer, an accomplished pianist and a lover of automobiles. He restored a '59 MGA and toured the United States visiting his brothers in Michigan and Florida. Walter was also a handyman par excellence and often helped his nephew Gerald, build fences and carports in Drumheller. Walter had a great sense of humor and gave to others freely. He remained a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 in Calgary for many decades and honored his Uncle Jack Wilson WWI, veteran of Vimy Ridge each Remembrance Day since 1958. He was loved by family and friends and will be missed.
A Legion service will be held at the Calgary No. 1 Branch, 116-7 Ave. SE at 11:00 am on October 29, 2011 followed by an interment at the Burnside Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers of Acute Care at the Drumheller Hospital and Monterey Place Assisted Living in Calgary.
