Nick Alex
October 27, 1932 - August 21, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Sereda of Drumheller, Alberta who passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2025 at the age of 92. He was born on a farm at Anton Lake, Alberta and at the age of 3 his family moved to Newcastle where his Dad found work in the coal mines.
Nick was an honest, hard working and devoted man. He began his working years at the young age of 15 on a haying crew at the Imperial Ranch. He would later work at the Midland Coal Mine from 1950 to 1957. In 1954 Nick married his soulmate Olga Ferby and they settled in Midland where they raised their 4 children: Nicky, Sally, Terry and Debbie. In 1957 Nick became a familiar face in the community as a door to door milkman with Brown’s Dairy for 17 years. In 1973 he took on a role as a guard at the Drumheller Penitentiary where he served with dedication until his retirement in 1997.
Nick had a great love for the simple joys in life. He played and coached baseball and was an avid fan as well. He loved watching hockey and was a dedicated Edmonton Oilers fan. In his retirement years he enjoyed curling, downhill and cross country skiing, golfing, crib and more recently regained his love for pool. He also found joy in watching and encouraging his grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their sporting activities. In addition to sports he found peace and pride in his garden where he spent many happy hours nurturing his garlic, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon and many other vegetables. There was always a bountiful harvest which he enjoyed sharing with his family and neighbours. He spent hours picking saskatoons here in the valley and took a trip every year back to his birth place to pick wild blueberries. Nick enjoyed volunteering and dedicated a lot of his time and energy in helping to make the community a better place.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph & Helen; his brothers Peter and Joe; and his sister Marion. He is survived by his beloved wife Olga, with whom he shared 71 wonderful years of marriage; his children Nicky (Darlene) Sereda; Sally (Don) Envoldsen; Terry Sereda; Debbie (Steve) Pittman; his sister Joyce Nelson; sister-in-law Rose Kulchyski; 9 Grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and his special companion Boots.
Nick’s steadfast love, quiet strength and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Dayo, Dr. Reiki and the Drumheller Home Care Staff. A memorial service will be held at the Midland Hall on Friday, August 29th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Drumheller Community Cancer Centre of the Drumheller Hospital.
