Lydia Auguste Obst
September 26, 1924 ~ August 14, 2023
On Friday, August 25, 2023 Lydia Auguste Obst (nee Ulinski) beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother passed peacefully with her daughter Gisela at her side, at the age of 98 years.
Lydia was born September 26, 1924 in Drobnitz, Kreis, Osterode (East Prussia) and raised on a 62 acre mixed farm. Towards the end of WW11, as the Russians advanced into North Poland, the Ulinski family fled to Germany and eventually, as a refugee, Lydia found a home and work. The last job was with the Americans stationed in Germany where she also learned some basic English. In 1948 she met Georg Obst, married and had two children. In August of 1953 the Obst family immigrated to Canada finding work on a farm in Ogema, Saskatchewan. In December of 1953 the family travelled to
Drumheller where Georg worked at the Nacmine (North American Coal Mine) until it closed in the 1960’s. Lydia has resided 70 years in Nacmine, the last 11 years on her own. In 2012 Lydia lost her husband Georg due to Cancer.
To mourn her loss, she leaves behind her daughter Gisela and her son Nils-Raidar (Marjorie), three grandchildren, Renate (Greg), Daniel (Kristen) and Marcus (Jennifer), and eight great grandchildren. As well as many relations in Germany will grieve her loss, especially her brother Walter Ulinski and his family.
As per our mother’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.
The Obst Family wish to extend their appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all the Drumheller Acute Care workers who cared for our mother. Your medical care and concern made our mother’s passing with ease possible.
Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
