Lawrence “Sonny” Simonin
Sonny passed away May 12, 2019 at the age of 75 years.
He was born in Bassano, Alberta on August 18, 1943 and grew up in Cluny, Alberta. Sonny did road construction where he met his wife to be, Chris Riddell. The couple lived in Cluny for one year after they were married and then moved to the Wintering Hills on April 1, 1968 where they began farming.
Sonny enjoyed sledding, baseball, fishing, camping, hunting, and hockey both playing and coaching. Sonny enjoyed spending his last few summers at the Hoo-Doo Campground where he made many friends, too many to mention. His granddaughters were his pride and joy, he would either call or text them almost every day. He enjoyed the many “Happy Hours”, drinking beer with his friends throughout the years, always lots of laughter and reminiscing about the “good ole days”. Sonny enjoyed his music, the old rock and country music, at times he could be heard belting out the words.
Sonny was predeceased by his father Luke Simonin, his mother Gladys Simonin, his sister Alice Atchison and his brother Ron Simonin.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Chris Simonin, his children; Brad Simonin of Red Deer, Heather Brilz (Simonin) of Red Deer, his two granddaughters Larissa Brilz and Brooke Brilz also of Red Deer, sisters Linda DeFreese, Dianna Hayes (Randy), numerous nieces, nephews, his aunt Doris Clements, and a lifetime of friends.
As per Sonny’s wishes there will be no formal funeral service held. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation, 351 9th Street N.W., Drumheller, Alberta, T0J 0Y1. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
The family of Sonny Simonin extends their gratitude for the care and compassion shown to the R.C.M.P, E.M.S. and the Dalum Fire Department.
