It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our “Old Guy” Kenneth Ross Powell on June 4, 2025, in Drumheller, Alberta.
Ross was born the only child to Ken and Marion Powell in Drumheller on February 11, 1947, and spent his early years in East Coulee before calling Drumheller home. After a short stint in the town of Taber during high school, Ross returned to the valley at age 18 to help his Aunt Kay run Valley Flowers. Shortly thereafter, he took over the family business and created R&J Specialties – a place for flowers and all things music. In 1974 he was joined by Trudy and together they fostered a wonderful business that their daughter Jolene continued until 2021.
Ross was a gifted musician whose skill was fostered early on by the childhood piano lessons his mom insisted he take. Coming from a family with a love of all things music, he developed a strong musical foundation. This led to him picking up the base guitar to join the active live music scene of the late 1960s and 1970s. Later in life, Ross’ love of music eventually led him to his “Singing Angel” Joanne, with whom he would spend countless nights playing guitar and singing karaoke until her passing in 2011.
Outside of his musical talents, Ross was also known as a kind man who devoted much of his time to his community. Ross was an active member of several clubs during his time, including the Active 20-30 Club, the Rotary Club, the Kinsmen Club and the Drumheller Fire Department, where he would proudly tell you he had a few years of perfect attendance. He was also a member of the Drumheller Masonic Lodge #146 from 1979 - 2001, serving as Worshipful Master in 1985 & 1986. Ross eventually retired to Yuma for the winters, which allowed him to finally live his life as he wanted: forever wearing shorts and never missing his Calgary Flames play.
Ross leaves behind his devoted daughter Jolene; her husband, and his second son, Kevin; his son and best bud Dustin; and the apple of his eye, his granddaughter Amanda and her spouse Lundon.
Ross was a gentle man with a smart wit, whose infectious laugh and flirty charm will be greatly missed by those closest to him and the community he adored.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Friends wishing to honour and remember Ross are invited to make donations to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation (Coalbanks Unit), 351 - 9th Street North West, Drumheller, Alta. T0J 0Y1.
