It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of our husband, father, and grandfather, James (Jim) Joseph Doyle Spiers on December 4, 2023 at age 75 years.
Jim was born in Kilwinning, Scotland on April 30, 1948, and immigrated to Canada in June 1957 with his family. Growing up in Lachine, Quebec, Jim was an avid hockey player, and lifelong supporter of the Montreal Canadiens. He moved out west to Alberta in 1973 to join his family. Here, Jim met the love of his life; Pauline, and they married in September 1979. They had two beautiful children together, Amanda (Jonathan) and James (Michelle). Then along came his pride and joy, his grand-daughter Elizabeth, in 2013. Nothing meant more to him than her and he would do anything for her. It has been said he bought up the entire baby section at Walmart for her first Christmas. He was truly the world’s greatest “Bubba.”
Jim was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth, his sisters, Christine and Rae, his father William and stepmother Doreen. He is survived by his loving family, his brother John, nephews Scott and Gregory and niece Amie.
Jim started his career with Corrections in June of 1982 and worked at Drumheller Institution in various capacities until his retirement in 2010. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and understanding as a fierce advocate for inmate rehabilitation. He was a strong Legion supporter and was a member of their executive for many years.
In his off time, you could find Jim on many of the golf courses around Alberta, Montana, or Arizona. When health issues got the better of him, he preferred to golf locally. Jim will be remembered for his lively conversations around town and his willingness to help and listen to a friend in need. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 17,2024 at 2 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #22 in Drumheller.
