In Memory of Dian Elaine Becker
Born: August 18, 1944
Passed: March 13, 2026
Dian’s story began in Edmonton, Alberta. Her father, William Richard Becker, came from Minot, North Dakota, and her mother, Myrtle Atchison, from Brisco, British Columbia. They settled in Alberta and were married in Lacombe in April of 1938. Together they welcomed two children. Sadly, Myrtle passed away while giving birth to Dian, leaving William to raise their family.
Dian and her brother spent their school years attending St. Joseph’s Convent. As a young woman, Dian carried a sense of curiosity and adventure that would stay with her throughout her life. Around the time of the 1967 Olympics, she moved to Montreal, Quebec, where she embraced new experiences, including travels to Europe.
Eventually, Dian found her way back west and settled in Calgary, Alberta. During these years, she often spoke proudly of owning a motorcycle, something she truly loved and that reflected her independent spirit. It was in Calgary that Dian met Donald Briggs, her partner in life. Together they built a home filled with shared adventures and laughter.
Dian was known for having a lucky streak, most memorably when she won a truck and camper at the Stampede. She and Don took full advantage of that good fortune, traveling throughout Northern Alberta to places like Slave Lake and heading south into the United States. Don worked for the City of Calgary until his retirement, after which the couple made Cambria, Alberta their home before eventually settling at Sunshine Lodge in Drumheller.
Dian became part of a close-knit community. She made many friends and was well known for tending not only to her own flowers, but also to those of her neighbors. Taking care of what was around her brought Dian great joy.
After Don’s passing in February 2018, Dian continued to find companionship and laughter with those around her. She spent time with her dear friend Billie, often playing the VLT’s. Once a month, Dian would make her way to the casino, sometimes accompanied by her friend Harry. Dian formed a friendship with Sheri Martynes, and each day, like clockwork, the two could be found sharing coffee together.
In November 2025, Dian was hospitalized and later transferred to Red Deer General Hospital, where she passed away. Sheri’s son was by her side.
Dian was predeceased by her mother, father, brother, and her beloved partner, Don.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who cared for Dian, as well as to the many friends who supported and loved her throughout her life.
